Shortlist Els Witte PhD Prize

On behalf of the jury, we are pleased to announce the shortlist for the Els Witte PhD Prize this year! From all submitted dissertations, the jury selected the following theses for the shortlist (names in alphabetical order).

  • Dr. Imogen T. Liu (Maastricht University) – Investing for the state: a finance-sensitive reading of the transnationalisation of Chinese state capital in Europe
  • Dr. Franziska Petri (KU Leuven) – One message, many messengers? The role of European Union Delegations in implementing climate and energy diplomacy across the globe
  • Dr. Željko Poljak (University of Antwerp) – Negativity in politics from election to election: attacks in parliaments throughout the electoral cycle
  • Dr. Emma Turkenburg (KU Leuven) – On Silver Tongues and Silver Linings. Examining controversial political communication and its effects on citizens’ reasoning

The winner of the award will be announced at the Annual Political Science Workshops of the Low Countries (Politicologenetmaal). The award ceremony for the Els de Witte PhD Prize will take place on the 13th of June. We would like to thank all colleagues for submitting your nomination!

Acta Politica Vacancy: Journal Co-Editor

Acta Politica – international journal of political science, published by Palgrave Macmillan as part of Springer Nature and covered by the Social Science Citation Index – has a vacancy for the post of Journal Co-Editor.

It is expected that the journal editor will:

• Actively acquire manuscripts in all fields of political science

• Select proper peer reviewers for an assessment of submissions

• Make decisions regarding publication of submitted manuscripts

• Edit manuscripts – if needed – to ensure these are presented in good English

• Manage contacts with the publisher, Palgrave Macmillan

• Develop ideas on the journal and its position in political science.

The candidate should be:

• A political scientist working at a university or a related academic or research institution, preferably a Dutch or Flemish institution

• Have demonstrable affinity with political science in the Low Countries

• Well-acquainted with European political science and its organisations (ECPR, EPSA, and EPSnet)

• Well versed in written English; experience in language editing is a bonus

The successful candidate is expected to start as Co-Editor per January 1, 2025.

The incoming Editor will work together with the other editor, Benjamin Leruth (University of Groningen). The editors are supported by an editorial secretary. Acta Politica strives for an editorial board that is diverse in terms of gender and research background: so, we encourage a wide diversity of people to apply for this position. Call for papers Annual Political Science Workshops of The Low Countries 2024

The next Politicologenetmaal, also known as the Annual Political Science Workshops of The Low Countries 2024 will take place on 13-14 June in Maastricht (the Netherlands). The call for papers is now launched: https://politicologenetmaal.eu/call-for-papers-2024/

Check whether your paper would fit one of the 14 excellent workshops and submit your abstract via the website by March 31 at 11:59 pm.

* During the Etmaal, we also award two prizes:

(1) The jury of the Els Witte Annual Prize for Political Science 2024 awards the best Ph.D. dissertation in political science (and related disciplines). The dissertation was defended in 2023 at a Belgian/Dutch university or elsewhere but relates to Dutch or Belgian politics.

(2) Every master thesis submitted in 2023 that obtained a score of at least 8 (The Netherlands) or 16 (Belgium) is eligible for the Daniel Heinsius thesis prize.

This exciting event is a collaboration between the Dutch Political Science Association (NKWP) and the Association for Political Science (VPW), and we are thrilled to announce that Maastricht University’s Department of Political Science will be the proud host of the upcoming edition!

Politicologenetmaal in Leuven op 1 en 2 juni 2023

Het Politicologenetmaal in Leuven op 1 en 2 juni 2023 was een groot succes! We willen graag het lokale organisatieteam bedanken voor hun geweldige inzet en uitstekende organisatie. Dankzij hun harde werk konden we genieten van een zeer geslaagde conferentie.

We zijn verheugd te melden dat het Politicologenetmaal deelnemers trok uit maar liefst 17 verschillende landen en van 42 universiteiten. Het totale aantal deelnemers was 206. Dit onderstreept de internationale aantrekkingskracht van het evenement en geeft een duidelijk beeld van de grote belangstelling en betrokkenheid bij het Politicologenetmaal.

Het succes van deze conferentie was niet alleen te danken aan het indrukwekkende aantal deelnemers, maar ook aan de kwaliteit van de presentaties, de discussies en de interacties tussen de deelnemers. Het Politicologenetmaal heeft een platform geboden waar academici, onderzoekers en practitioners uit verschillende landen en universiteiten elkaar konden ontmoeten, ideeën konden uitwisselen en waardevolle netwerken konden opbouwen.

We zijn trots op het resultaat van het Politicologenetmaal in Leuven en bedanken nogmaals het lokale organisatieteam voor hun inzet en toewijding. We kijken nu al uit naar het volgende evenement en hopen dat het net zo succesvol zal zijn als deze editie!

Forum Workshop

Op 1 september organiseert International Political Sociology Belgium een Forum Workshop aan de ULB. Dit nieuwe format is speciaal ontworpen voor jonge onderzoekers die op zoek zijn naar inspiratie op het gebied van de besproken onderwerpen, namelijk schandalen, geweld en het antropoceen. Winnaar Els Witte PhD Prijs en Daniël Heinsiusprijs

De jury heeft de winnaar voor de Els Witte Jaarprijs Politicologie voor het beste proefschrift bekend gemaakt. De winnaar is geselecteerd uit de genomineerde proefschriften die in het afgelopen jaar zijn verschenen. De jury heeft besloten de prijs toe te kennen aan Charlotte de Roon (Universiteit Leiden) voor haar proefschrift “The Functioning of Dutch Party Youth Wings: a comparison of the 1980s and 2010s”. Van harte gefeliciteerd!

Ook willen we Agnes Termeer (Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam) feliciteren met het winnen van de Daniël Heinsiusprijs voor de beste scriptie van het voorgaande jaar. Haar scriptie, getiteld ‘Jihadist Justice: Dissecting Rebel Legal Order, Governance and Legitimacy in the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria and the Taliban Insurgency’, heeft de jury overtuigd. Nogmaals van harte gefeliciteerd!
