Al vanaf 2001 is het gebruikelijk dat er een workshop over lokale politiek plaatsvindt op het Etmaal. In 2020 kan het Etmaal geen doorgang vinden, maar wél zal de workshop over lokale politiek, georganiseerd door Herwig Reynaert van de Universiteit Gent en Peter Castenmiller (Universiteit Leiden), plaatsvinden. Deze bijeenkomst zal plaatsvinden op vrijdag 30 oktober, onder Corona-veilige omstandigheden in het Humanity House te Den Haag. Belangstellenden kunnen desgewenst contact opnemen met Peter Castenmiller (p.castenmiller@planet.nl). Natuurlijk is het mogelijk om een paper te presenteren over lokale politiek in Nederland of Vlaanderen. Zoals gebruikelijk in deze workshop ben je ook als ‘deelnemer zonder paper’ meer dan welkom. Deelnamekosten zullen circa € 100,- bedragen.

Beste lid van de NKWP/ Dear member of the NKWP:

Op deze wijze willen we u informeren over het aanstaande politicologenetmaal.
 
Dr. Maurits Meijers en Dr. Andrej Zaslove, Radboud Universiteit hebben ons zojuist verwittigd van het volgende besluit gezien de aankondigingen van het kabinet gisterenavond (dinsdag 21 april).
 
Omdat het kabinet heeft aangekondigd dat alle evenementen tot 1 september 2020 zullen worden verboden, spijt het ons u te moeten meedelen dat het Politicologenetmaal 2020 niet kan plaatsvinden op 11-12 juni 2020, zoals eerder was voorzien.
 
Het politicologenetmaal 2020 is verplaatst en vindt plaats op zaterdag 3 oktober 2020.
In tegenstelling tot onze traditie om een ’24-uurs’-conferentie te zijn, wordt de conferentie gehouden als een eendaagse conferentie.
 
De komende dagen zullen workshopchairs in contact komen met panelleden en vragen of ze willen bevestigen of ze kunnen blijven deelnemen aan de workshop op 3 oktober 2020. Workshopchairs mogen eventueel extra deelnemers werven voor hun workshops, maar er zal geen formele verlenging van de Call for Papers (CfP) zijn. Sommige workshopchairs kunnen ervoor kiezen om voor hun workshop een extra CfP rond te sturen. Leden die interesse hebben om deel te nemen, kunnen daarom rechtstreeks de workshopchairs aanschrijven, indien ze graag willen deelnemen en nog niet bij een workshop zijn toegelaten. Het is aan de workshopstoelen om te beslissen of er ruimte is voor extra deelnemers.
 
De selectie van workshops zal tijdens de zomer worden afgerond. Workshopchairs is gevraagd om de volledige deelnemerslijst uiterlijk 14 augustus 2020 (eerder is mogelijk) naar de organisatoren te sturen.
 
De registratie wordt binnenkort geopend en sluit op 19 september 2020.
 
We realiseren ons maar al te goed dat er nog veel onduidelijkheid bestaat over of publieksevenementen daadwerkelijk door kunnen gaat dit najaar. We hebben zeker de mogelijkheid overwogen dat, vanwege overheidsregels, ook de conferentie op 3 oktober te zijner tijd eventueel alsnog kan moeten worden geannuleerd. Maar aangezien iedereen al veel werk heeft gestoken in het organiseren van deze conferentie, wilden we niet op dit moment al de conferentie meteen annuleren. Wij zijn van mening dat de bovenstaande bepalingen een minimale extra inspanning vergen die de moeite waard is voor het geval de conferentie alsnog in oktober kan plaatsvinden.
 
Voor alle duidelijkheid, voor het geval dat de conferentie op 3 oktober alsnog moet worden geannuleerd, zullen de registratiegelden van geregistreerde deelnemers volledig terugbetaald worden.
 
Mocht u door de huidige situatie niet meer kunnen deelnemen aan uw workshop, schrijf dan alstublieft naar de workshopchair. We weten dat dit uiterst stressvolle tijden zijn, gezien het feit dat velen thuis werken, thuisonderwijs verzorgen en/of andere zorgtaken hebben, en wellicht heeft u zelfs te maken met ziekte, economische onzekerheid, of ander persoonlijk verlies.

Following my last note, on 13 March, here is an update about the upcoming ‘politicologenetmaal’ (the annual Dutch/Flemish political science conference).
 
Dr Maurits Meijers en Dr. Andrej Zaslove, of the Radboud Universiteit have provided us with the following update in light of the announcements last night of the Dutch government.
 
We regret to inform you that the Politicologenetmaal 2020 cannot take place as scheduled on June 11-12, 2020. The Dutch government has announced that all events will be banned until September 1, 2020.
The conference will be postponed to Saturday October 3, 2020. In contrast to our tradition of being a ’24 hour’ conference, the conference will be held as a one-day conference.

In the next days, workshop chairs will be getting in touch with panel participants and ask whether they wish to participate in the workshop on October 3, 2020. Workshop Chairs are permitted to recruit additional participants for their workshops, but there will not be a formally extension of the Call for Papers. Some workshop chairs may opt to send out an additional Call for Paper invitations for their workshop. Any members interested in participating may therefore approach workshop chairs directly, if they wish to be considered to be added to a workshop. It is the discretion of the workshop chairs to decide if there is space for additional presenters.

Workshop selection will be formalized over the summer. Workshop chairs have been asked to send the full list of participants to the organisers no later than August 14, 2020 (earlier is possible).
Registration will open soon and will close on September 19, 2020.

We are all aware there is still a lot of uncertainty regarding the possibilities for public events in autumn. We definitely entertain the possibility that – due to government regulations – also the October 3 date will have to be cancelled. Yet as everyone has put a lot of work in organizing this conference already, we are reluctant to cancel the conference outright at this stage. We believe that the above provisions require minimal additional effort that is worth investing in case the conference can take place.
In case of cancellation of the October 3 date, registered participants can receive a full refund.

If you feel that the current situation does not allow you to continue participation in your workshop, please write to the workshop chair. We understand that these are extremely stressful times as people cope with home office, homeschooling, and other care responsibilities.

On Thursday June 11 and Friday June 12 2020 the ‘Politicologenetmaal’ (24-hour Political Science Conference) is jointly organized for the nineteenth time by the Dutch Political Science Association (NKWP) and the Association for Political Science (VPW). This time the conference will be organized by the Department of Political Science of Radboud University in Nijmegen, the Netherlands.

The main focus of the conference lies on thematic workshops (two on Thursday afternoon and two on Friday morning). In each workshop there is room for about ten papers, and we are looking for workshop proposals for these sessions. The workshops can relate to a broad range of topics, going from empirical political science to political theory and from international relations to local politics. Workshops can be proposed by both academics and practitioners. The conference language is Dutch, but sessions can also be held in English, at the discretion of the chairs.

Traditionally, the conference starts on Thursday at noon and ends on Friday after lunch. A plenary session with a keynote lecture is held on Thursday evening, with this year a debate and award ceremonies for the best PhD thesis and the best Master thesis.

Op 11 juni 2020 reiken de Vereniging voor Politieke Wetenschappen (VPW) en de Nederlandse Kring voor Wetenschap der Politiek (NKWP) tijdens het Politicologenetmaal te Nijmegen opnieuw de Daniel Heinsius Thesisprijs voor de beste masterthesis uit. Voor deze prijs kan elke masterthesis in 2019 beoordeeld met minstens een 8 (Nederland) of 16 (België) worden voorgedragen. Inzendingen, inclusief de thesis zelf en een bewijs van het behaalde resultaat, kunnen per email verstuurd worden naar Gilles Pittoors (gilles.pittoors@ugent.be). De deadline voor inzendingen is maandag 3 februari 2020.

Call for submissions for Daniel Heinsius Thesis Prize

On 11 June 2020, during the plenary session of the 24 Hours of Political Science in Nijmegen, the Flemish Political Science Association (VPW) and the Dutch Political Science Association (NKWP) award the Daniel Heinsius Thesis Prize for best master thesis in political science. Every master student who submitted his or her thesis in 2019 and obtained a score of at least 8 (The Netherlands) or 16 (Belgium) is eligible for the prize. Submissions, including the thesis itself and proof of the score obtained, can be sent by email to Gilles Pittoors (gilles.pittoors@ugent.be). The deadline for submission is Monday 3 February 2020.

Lea Smidt (Universiteit Maastricht) heeft met haar scriptie Can Civil Society be Socially Engineered? The Influence of EU Democracy Aid on Civic Participation in Africa de Daniël Heinsiusprijs 2019 voor de beste politicologische masterscriptie gewonnen. In de scriptie vraagt Lea Smidt of democratische hulp van de EU in Afrika goed is voor de burgerparticipatie, of juist averechts werkt. Deze zeer uitdagende en relevante vraagstelling is onderbouwd met een enorme kennis van de literatuur. Om de vraag te beantwoorden gebruikt Smidt zowel multilevel regressie op data uit 36 Afrikaanse landen, als een inventief quasi-experiment in zes landen. De scriptie onderscheidde zich van andere zestien ingediende scripties met haar methodologisch innovatieve aanpak, aldus de jury.

De winnaar van de Els Witte Jaarprijs voor het beste politicologische proefschrift 2019 is Koen Damhuis (Universiteit Utrecht). Hij kreeg op het politicologenetmaal 2019 de prijs uitgereikt voor het proefschrift dat hij aan het European University Institute (Florence) verdedigde: Roads to the Radical Right. Understanding Different Forms of Electoral Support for Radical Right-Wing Parties in France and the Netherlands. In de ogen van de jury onder leiding van Marcel Boogers (Universiteit Twente) waren de twaalf genomineerde proefschriften allemaal van goede wetenschappelijke kwaliteit. Koen Damhuis onderscheidde zich echter onder meer met zijn nauwgezette onderzoek van de tweets van Marine le Pen (Front National) en Geert Wilders (PVV) én uitgebreide interviews met hun aanhang. Dat bood verfijnd inzicht in de uiteenlopende motieven voor de electorale steun aan deze partijen.

A jury of Dutch and Flemish political scientists led by Steven Van de Walle (KU Leuven) many excellent dissertations defended in 2018. Four of these dissertations were nominated for the Jaarpijs. Congratulations to the nominees! The Els Witte Jaarprijs will be awarded at the Politicologenetmaal, June 13th, at Antwerp University. The nominees and dissertations are, in alphabetical order: 

·        Femke Bakker (Universiteit Leiden), Hawks and Doves. Democratic Peace Theory Revisited.

·        Wouter Geert Broekema (Universiteit Leiden,) When does the Phoenix Rise? Factors and Mechanisms that Influence Crisis-Induced Learning by Public Organizations.

·        Koen Damhuis (European University Institute), Roads to the Radical Right. Understanding Different Forms of Electoral Support for Radical Right-Wing Parties in France and the Netherlands.

·        Philippe van Gruisen (KU Leuven), The Political Economy of Decision-Making  in the Council of the European Union.

De genomineerden voor de Daniël Heinsiusprijs 2019 voor de beste politicologische scriptie van het afgelopen jaar zijn bekend. Een jury bestaande uit Trineke Palm (Universiteit Utrecht), Mariken van der Velden (VU Amsterdam), Koenraad de Ceuninck (Universiteit van Gent), Iskander de Bruycker (Universiteit van Antwerpen) en Daphne van der Pas (UvA) hebben de shortlist gemaakt. De uitreiking van de Heinsiusprijs vindt zoals gebruikelijk plaats tijdens de plenaire bijeenkomst van het jaarlijkse Politicologenetmaal. Die bijeenkomst is op donderdagavond 13 juni in Antwerpen (zie https://politicologenetmaal.eu/). De genomineerden zijn in alfabetische volgorde:

– Lea Franke (Universiteit van Leuven): ‘Whom do public officials trust? A quantitative study combining public officials’ trust in citizens and interorganisational trust in the public sector in Sweden and France’
